Temporary lifting of the 20-hour work week cap for international students
This measure affects more than 500,000 foreign students.
BEFORE November 15, 2022:
Under normal circumstances, a person who holds a study permit in Canada can usually work up to 20 hours per week off-campus without a work permit (except for school breaks when they can work full-time). However, it should be noted that if you are authorized to work on your university campus, the 20-hour limit does not apply. As long as you work on campus you can work as many hours as you want. A student is allowed to work either on or off campus, depending on what is stated on the study permit. To verify the conditions of your right to work, simply check the conditions written on your study permit document.
AFTER November 15, 2022:
In October 2022, the Canadian government announced that students authorized to work off-campus will be able to work more than 20 hours per week from November 15, 2022 to December 31, 2023 :
This new government measure is intended to alleviate the labour shortage that many Canadian companies are currently facing.
This measure will allow approximately 500,000 international students in Canada to earn more money in 2023 to finance their education and improve their quality of life.
We don't know if this will be extended to 2024, only the government will tell us.
